Space Café takes off again!

The Horizon 2020 project InnORBIT aims to support the commercialization of space through practical, easily replicable solutions to innovation intermediaries so they can launch and manage long-lasting local initiatives. As one of the project partners who is an innovation intermediary, Algebra Lab has implemented a series of space cafes with the assistance of InnORBIT.

These space cafes are informal and interactive online discussions that focus on how space data is used in a variety of business and industrial applications. The use of space data in agricultural applications, the financial sector, and location services, as well as how to use open-source online space data, were all discussed. We have held 7 Space Cafes since March 2022, which have served as a springboard for discussion of space technology opportunities.

Here were the topics and speakers who joined us:

  1. On-site services and Location Based Services (LBS): Dario Vuljanko
  2. Data Processing and New Space:  Giorgio Licciardi
  3.  Space and the financial sector: Mirta Medaric
  4. New Space and its use in agriculture: Ivan Tomljenović
  5. Monitoring parameters from the environment via IoT and the connection with satellites: Davor Predavec
  6. Space is driving a transition in agriculture: Dr. Guerric de Crombrugghe
  7. Carbon offset: Dušan Jelić

The space cafes work to create a network of interest in space-related business uses. They are always held online and are available in either English or Croatian. We were very happy that our numbers for each cafe increased steadily over the course of the series, especially considering that Croatia is a new ecosystem in the space tech industry. Less than 10% of those who attended our cafes typically had no prior experience with the commercial space applications sector. Through various social media platforms, Algebra was able to reach a network of SMEs, SME participants, academic departments and students using its own social community along with the InnORBIT consortium social network.

Beginning on February 1, 2023, and running through to the end of May, our new series of space cafes will cover topics such as the recent advancements in space technology, maritime growth, communication, and agricultural applications.

Here are the topics for our series of 7 upcoming space cafes, all held online at 15:00:

  1. Space applications that support the digital transformation of public infrastructure: Feb 1: Candela Sancho
  2. Space and response to humanitarian crises: Mar 8: Stéphane Ourevitch and Igor Magdalenic
  3. Green building techniques, space architecture and space habitability: Mar 22: Ognjan Božić and Alma Kugić
  4. Space and tourism: Apr 11: Slobodan Bosanac
  5. Space Systems for Safety (4S): Apr 27: Zoran Kahrić
  6. Space engineering: waste and autonomous robots: May 9: Zdenko Uvalić, Space debris; Bojan Jerbić, Autonomous robots in space
  7. Observing the Earth with Copernicus: May 30th: Zvonimir Nevistić

At our February space cafe, we'll be joined by Candela Sancho, co-founder of Detektia, a system for monitoring infrastructure that generates early warnings based on satellite RADAR technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. Candela will talk about how preventive maintenance is currently done and how using new satellite-based monitoring tools can help with managing digital infrastructure.
