From March 3rd to 7th, 2025, the field component of the Erasmus+ blended intensive programme Light and the City organized by the Design and Graphic Design Academy (AANT), took place in Rome, Italy.

In addition to AANT and Algebra Bernays University, the programme gathered students from Arteveldehogeschool (Ghent, Belgium) and Politécnico de Portalegre (Portalegre, Portugal).

Stepping into Rome on March 1st, we were immediately immersed in its unique rhythm—a blend of historic grandeur and modern energy. The city’s vibrant streets, filled with the scent of espresso and lively conversations, became our playground for the week. While navigating public transport took some getting used to, it quickly became second nature, allowing us to explore Rome in full.

About the programme:

Our group consisted of students from Algebra Bernays University: Marko Sladić and Ira Geržina, second-year Multimedia Production students, along with first-year students Lara Vojković, Petra Gluhić, Bruno Ježek, and Leon Belovarić, led by our professor Inia Herenčić. Sharing accommodation between students strengthened our bond as a group. The six of us quickly found a rhythm—late-night chats, casual breakfasts, and the small, everyday moments that turned us into more than just travel companions. Living together made the experience richer, as we exchanged perspectives not only on the programme but on life itself.

The “Light and the City” programme at AANT offered us a fresh perspective on the interaction of light and architecture. Each of us developed a portfolio, capturing how light plays with structure, material, and texture. This hands-on approach refined our photography skills while pushing us to think more deeply about visual storytelling.

Guided by Claudia Primangeli and Alessandra Reggiani, we gained insight into history, architecture, and lighting design that broadened our understanding of our field. Collaborating with students from different countries also enriched the experience, allowing us to share ideas and approaches that expanded our creative outlook.

Despite attending the same lectures and visiting the same locations, each of us interpreted Rome in our own way. This reaffirmed that creativity is limitless and that working across cultures enhances both personal and professional growth.

What our students had to say about Rome and Italian food:

Each day was packed with exploration, from the awe-inspiring Vatican to the ruins of the Forum. Every corner of Rome told a story, and as we wandered through its ancient streets, we gained a deeper appreciation for its artistic and architectural treasures. The city’s charm extended beyond its landmarks—the warmth of its people and the energy of its culture left a lasting impact on us.

A key highlight was undoubtedly the food. Every lunch was an opportunity to try something new, from perfectly cooked pasta to crisp, flavorful pizza. And of course, no day was complete without a proper Italian coffee break—a moment to pause, soak in the atmosphere, and reflect on the day’s experiences.

As we departed on March 8th, we carried home much more than souvenirs. We returned with strengthened friendships, new skills, and a renewed sense of inspiration. While the programme had come to an end, its influence on our creative paths will last far beyond our time in Rome.

When asked if they would recommend this Erasmus+ program to their colleagues, our students stated:

Without a doubt.

Blended intensive programmes like “Light and the City” provide a unique opportunity to grow both academically and personally. Engaging with students from different backgrounds challenged our perspectives, fostered adaptability, and encouraged open-minded thinking. These experiences push participants to step beyond their comfort zones, navigate new challenges, and appreciate diverse viewpoints.

Beyond academics, these international programmes cultivate personal development, new skills, and lasting connections. Exploring Rome while collaborating with AANT was the perfect mix of learning and adventure—an experience that goes beyond education and becomes a defining moment in one’s journey.

For any student with a passion for creativity, culture, and exploration, we wholeheartedly recommend taking part in Erasmus+ programmes. These experiences don’t just add to a CV—they shape the way we see the world, leaving a mark that lasts well beyond the trip itself.
