Algebra Bernays student representing Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel
Marko Bošnjak: “I want to combine my music career with communications”
Croatia’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, Marko Bošnjak, is not only preparing for his performance at one of the world’s most prestigious music competitions but is also building his academic career. Marko is a student at Algebra Bernays University, enrolled in the Undergraduate Study Programme in Communication Management, and is already successfully applying his academic knowledge to his music career.
“At first, I wasn’t sure what to study. I had been studying Music Business in Berlin but returned to Zagreb for several reasons and began searching for something that truly interested me. Public relations and communication management turned out to be a perfect fit for what I do. I made a very thoughtful decision because I know this knowledge can help me in my career and in media appearances,” Marko shares.
Support from professors
Leading experts teaching at Algebra Bernays University have played a key role in Marko’s preparation for Dora and Eurovision.
“We have amazing professors who are still active in the industry. They understand trends and follow what’s happening, so they were able to give me real-life examples and teach me how to build my brand and present myself. They are always willing to answer my questions and share advice,” Marko explains.
One of the most important lessons he has learned during his studies is how to clearly define his direction and, as he says, “filter the audience.”
“Everything I could apply, I applied. The knowledge I gained at university helped me through several difficult situations, especially when some controversy arose related to my previous job in a fast-food restaurant. One of my professors in the Public Relations course helped me learn a lesson for the future of my career,” says Marko, the author of the song “Poison Cake.”
Balancing studies and Eurovision
Alongside his studies and Eurovision preparations, Marko is mindful of balancing his commitments.
“Professors and classmates are very understanding, and since I’m studying PR, a lot of what I do now is actually practice. I’m learning through life and this experience. Still, I know I’ll have to sit down and study, because professors won’t give me a free pass — although I know I have their support, which means a lot to me right now,” he adds.
Advice for future students
Marko also has advice for young musicians considering the same study programme:
“Good time management and regular attendance are essential. Professors really try to explain as much as possible, so there shouldn’t be any issues. It’s important to follow your own path, not seek validation from others, but focus on your responsibilities, your studies, and your artistic work,” Marko highlights.
Future plans
After completing his studies, Marko plans to combine his passion and profession by working in music PR and helping young emerging artists.
“I have many years of experience in media, and I would love to help young artists build their brand. I know how challenging it can be, but also how fulfilling,” he says.
Countdown to Eurovision
Marko has two more months of intense Eurovision preparations, including numerous appearances on Eurovision websites, social media platforms, and promotional events.
“We are going to three Eurovision parties across Europe, including Madrid and Amsterdam, which is an important part of the promotion because it allows the audience to meet you face to face. I also find it easier to express myself in English, so the interviews come across better,” he admits.
Combining music, business, and education
Marko’s story shows how important education is for building a successful career that may not follow a typical path. Algebra Bernays University offers students practical knowledge they can immediately apply, and Marko’s example is an inspiration to anyone who wants to combine art and business and build a career in today’s digital world. His determination and ability to apply what he has learned to real-life situations prove that theory and practice truly can go hand in hand.
Through his own journey, he has shown how essential it is to adapt to the challenges of modern times — not only in the music industry but also in broader contexts of public appearances and personal branding. At the core of all this lies quality education, which provides students like Marko with the opportunity to build authentic careers based on knowledge, innovation, and personal expression.
