Module title:

Drawing 2 - Drawing techniques

Module overview:

The objective of this module is to enable students to learn to:
• understand basic drawing techniques and the development of key factors that define perception and practical skills of drawing and sketching
• use theoretical knowledge on basic elements of visual culture and practical improvement of analytical thinking in sketching processes

Through practical work, students will be introduced to the techniques and methods which will ensure the optimal quality of their drawing skills necessary for their design practices. This will be achieved by a gradual approach in understanding, analysing, and defining each personal drawing process, using the structural line drawings as a basis to create solutions to art problems in the tonal and chiaroscuro imaginary system. Drawing techniques will include a recreation of portraits, nudes, figures, animals, landscapes etc. by introducing and gradually increasing the amount of tonal values and studying the process of defining and utilizing correct tonal values to best represent any given motif. The emphasis will be placed on mastering the usage of tonal values and the problem borders between tones on a complex motif.

The module is based on various thematical units. The main goal is to offer a wide range of various tasks through which students can develop their perception and transform their observation into precise drawings. The workflow of this module will combine personal and group progresses. During the semester the students will have to produce between 40 -60 drawings and sketches. Every new assignment will be formed as a continuation of the previous one. Along with practical work, students will have to elaborate and analyse their own practice, as well as the work of others.
