Module title:
Introduction to computer networks
Lecturers and associates:
Module overview:
The main goal of this module is to enable students to learn how communication between devices in a computer network is achieved and how to build a functional small computer network in a network simulator. More detailed objectives of this module are:
Get to know the general architecture and key characteristics of computer networks, as well as network terminology, technologies and tools used in computer networks.
Learn how network communication occurs using the 7-layer OSI model.
Get to know the details of the transport, network, and data layers.
Learn to analyse network traffic and interpret what and why is happening on the network.
Learn to create a small network with an addressing scheme and explain the key elements of a secure network environment and how wireless networks are used today.
It is important for students to attend this module to gain an understanding of how to establish and maintain communication between devices in a computer network, and to understand the importance of a secure network environment in modern business. In this module, students will learn to use network simulators and network communication analysis tools. To explain communication in a computer network and analyse network communication, based on the understanding of the OSI and TCP/IP models that students will acquire during the module.
In this module students will learn:
recognize the key elements of computer network architecture.
terminology and technologies used in computer networks.
use reference models to explain and analyse communication in a computer network.
create an address scheme for a small network.
choose equipment for a small network.
implement a small computer network in a network simulator.
recognize the basic features of network security.
recognize the role of wireless communication in a modern computer network.
