During the week of 19th to 25th May 2025, Algebra Bernays University actively took part in marking the EU Mental Health Week. Through a series of thoughtfully designed activities, we encouraged open conversations about the importance of mental health, the development of healthy lifestyle habits, and the strengthening of a sense of belonging within the academic community.
One of the most memorable moments was the organised walk from the campus to Lake Jarun and back, held on 20th May. The gathering began in front of the campus, where around thirty students and staff members set off together on the walk to Jarun, each carrying a backpack with refreshments. The day was almost symbolically sunny – perfect for stepping out of the everyday routine together. At our destination, we enjoyed a relaxed picnic in the shade on the grass, during which we held the activity “Tell Me a Story”, where participants shared personal experiences and reflections related to mental health. Conversations about challenges, traumas, and lessons learned unfolded in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust. We rounded off the walk with some social time over ice cream and chilled lemonade, just in time before a heavy downpour rolled in overhead.
Throughout the week, bowls filled with fresh fruit – pears, apples, and bananas – were available in the canteen, symbolising everyday self-care. Information stands were also set up around the campus, offering a book exchange focused on mental health and self-help literature, along with small gifts for all participants. At the stands, students could also collect information about the PassSport programme – an initiative that links movement and sport with better mental wellbeing. Our student health ambassadors played a key role in informing and motivating their peers.
As part of the week, a variety of workshops and educational sessions were held – from empowering individuals to respond to harassment in public spaces, to open discussions about friendship in the digital age during the “From FOMO to JOMO” workshop.
The Student Counselling Service is available daily to all students at Algebra Bernays University. Its primary role is to strengthen and support students’ mental health and assist them in coping with life’s challenges. This service remains accessible to all students beyond the conclusion of the EU Mental Health Week, serving as a permanent resource and support on their journey towards wellbeing and balance.
By participating in these activities, we demonstrated that mental health is not just an individual responsibility, but a shared value. We would like to thank everyone who contributed their presence, energy and openness in creating a culture of support, understanding and balance.
