Mario Kovač, PhD, is a professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, a member of the European Commission Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies ICT and an expert of the Horizon 2020 Leadership in Enabling & Industrial Technologies ICT Committee.

He received his Master of Science degree in 1991 and his PhD in 1995 from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. He is the recipient of Fulbright scholarship, and in 2008, he was awarded the Croatian Medal of Honor: Order of Danica Hrvatska with the image of Ruđer Bošković by the President of the Republic of Croatia.

During his work experience, he was the Secretary of the Department of Information Systems at the Croatian Academy of Engineering, expert of FP7 ICT Committee, Vice President of the Supervisory Board of BICRO, two-time President of the Administrative Council of CARNet and Vice President of the Supervisory Board of CARNET, Vice President of the Supervisory Board of the Croatian Institute of Technology, member of the Technology Council of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, member of the Management Board of the Croatian Institute of Telemedicine, Vice Dean for Business Development at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Head of the Department of Control and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing.

As an inventor he holds a United States Patent 5659362 patent for a VLSI circuit structure for implementing the JPEG image compression standard and he is a member of IEEE, Croatian Academy of Engineering.
