Course overview
This module introduces students to PAN, WLAN and LPWAN communication networks and their application in modern Internet of things architectures.
This module is a part of the optional Internet of things module group, building on previous Embedded Platforms and Operating Systems, Sensors and Actuators and Wireless Computer Networks 1 modules in the same module group.
Students who take this module group will gain knowledge and skills in software engineering for Internet of things, contributing significantly to students’ development as professionals in that field.
Students will learn:
• About architecture, basic concepts and characteristics of PAN and WLAN communication networks.
• About architecture, basic concepts and characteristics of LPWAN communication networks.
• How to program embedded solutions based on PAN, WLAN and LPWAN modems.
The module is taught on the selected embedded platform in C++ programming language. The module assessment is based on solving a series of smaller practical tasks and by solving an individual project task in the defined programming language.

Minimal learning outcomes
- Compare the architecture, basic concepts and characteristics of PAN and WLAN communication networks.
- Design the architecture of a software solution that uses a PAN or WLAN communication network.
- Create own software solution using an embedded computer and modem for a PAN or WLAN communication network.
- Compare the architecture, basic concepts and characteristics and emphasize strengths and weaknesses of LPWAN systems.
- Design the architecture of a complex software solution that uses the LPWAN communication network, including individual components of the LPWAN network (hub, network server, application server)
- Create own software solution using an embedded computer and modem for the LPWAN communication network.
Preferred learning outcomes
