Course overview

The objectives of this module is to introduce students to the underlying principles of wireless communication and for students to learn how to implement wireless technologies to extend wired local area networks.

Students learn:
• To perform a site survey before implementation of wireless network
• To measure and calculate the signal strength of a wireless network
• To select the appropriate antenna for the specific purpose
• To implement a functional wireless computer network using stand-alone wireless access points
• To implement a functional wireless computer network using wireless access points controlled by wireless LAN controllers
• To adequately integrate wireless and wired computer networks

This module is important to support student's understanding and knowledge to implement wireless computer network technologies using campus network architecture as a model.

It is the only module on this programme of study that specifically deals with wireless local area networks (WLAN) as an extension of wired LAN.

After successfully passing this module students will be able to prepare, implement, adjust and maintain wireless local area network in campus network infrastructure used in any modern network (e.g. schools and hospitals)

  • Define the characteristics of electromagnetic signals, modulation techniques, and signal management techniques used in 802.11 standards
  • Analyze frequency spectrum and choose the proper wireless antennae (site-survey)
  • Implement a functional wireless local area network using standalone and controlled wireless access points

  • Compare wireless standards and technologies used in the implementation of modern wireless computer network
  • Determine the best deployment scenario based on the conducted measurements
  • Test the functionality of implemented wireless computer network based on standalone and controlled wireless access points
