The AI2MED (Artificial Intelligence in Medical Care: Reducing Errors and Saving Lives) project, co-funded by the European Union, aims to transform healthcare education by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into medical practise. With the aim of closing the skills gap in medicine and equipping students, educators and professionals with future-proof skills, AI2MED is developing innovative curricula, MOOCs and training materials to prepare European healthcare for the digital age.
On 11 and 12 September 2025, the partners met in Naples, Italy, for a dynamic project meeting hosted by the University of Naples Federico II. This lively event brought together universities, research organisations, incubators and healthcare experts from across Europe to take stock of progress, share insights and plan the next phases of the project.
A meeting of ideas and innovations
The sessions served not only to review ongoing activities, but also to encourage creativity and collaboration. The day began with a stimulating icebreaker that set the tone for open dialogue and new perspectives. The partners then reflected on the overall progress and achievements of the project to date to ensure AI2MED remains on track to deliver impactful results.
A particular highlight was the first insight into the Incubation Lab, which focuses on stakeholder engagement and innovation. During an interactive Innovation Lab Design Jam, the partners explored how to make AI in medicine more accessible and meaningful for communities and healthcare professionals. This was followed by the Stakeholder Safari, where strategies were discussed on how to effectively reach, engage and involve different target groups – from medical students and professionals to policy makers and the general public.
Another important focus was the dissemination and communication of AI2MED results. A MOOC dissemination strategy was presented, outlining how the project’s free and open online courses will reach thousands of learners across Europe. The discussion focused not only on how to disseminate the results, but also on how to ensure that MOOCs become permanent tools for building AI competences in healthcare.
A Multidisciplinary Perspective
On the second day, AI2MED partners actively participated in the national dissemination event A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Application of AI in Life Sciences. This event brought together a wider community of researchers, healthcare professionals and technology experts to discuss how AI is currently being applied in the life sciences.
The event highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and how AI can improve safety, support ethical practises and improve outcomes in both healthcare and related scientific fields. For AI2MED, this was an opportunity not only to present the project results, but also to contribute them to a broader European and global discussion on the role of AI in shaping the future of medicine.
Collaboration and shared vision
What stood out most during the meeting was the spirit of collaboration. Each partner contributed their expertise – from data science and AI ethics to medical education and innovation ecosystems – creating a multidisciplinary dialogue that reflects the heart of AI2MED’s mission. The exchange of ideas confirmed that the project is not just about developing educational resources, but also about building a European community ready to use AI responsibly in healthcare.
Looking Ahead
At the end of the meeting, the partners left Naples with renewed energy and a shared commitment to the next phases of AI2MED. The coming months will see the finalisation of stakeholder engagement strategies, the piloting of innovative approaches and the roll-out of the project’s MOOCs and training materials.
AI2MED continues to demonstrate how European collaboration can address pressing challenges in healthcare and education. By combining expertise from medicine, technology and education, the project is paving the way for a smarter, fairer and more accessible healthcare system.
Against the backdrop of Naples, the AI2MED partnership reaffirmed its commitment to shaping the future of healthcare – a future where AI empowers professionals and improves outcomes for patients across Europe.
